5 Important Speedmasters for Chronos

Even though the case is 52mm wide, it should be relatively light given the titanium case material. The leather strap is thickly made and uses a very good style of double contrast stitching in both red and yellow to match the tones of the dials. PVD is applied to the case to give it the black colors. The process must be very touch to result in the checkerboard look on the side as well as the BRM logo on the face of the watch. Price for this timepiece on James List right now is about ,500.

So the included watch will be this shown new Parmigiani Bugatti Tourbillon. A watch that has four purposes. First it will fit into at least two spots on the car (center of the dashboard, as well as near the instrument panel cluster), fit into a wrist watch strap module, fit into a pocket watch module, and bit into a desk clock module. I am not sure whether the watch will be wound somehow while being docked into the car. This should be the case though right?

Anyhow, the Double Diaphragm Eclipse is pretty nifty, and you can tell how it is much like other Michael Bittel watches. He uses adjustable blinds on the dials to alter the images. This watch is similar in theme.  Bittel says it has about three dials. This is true. Remember how I said it has a opening and closing shutter for the dial? Well it actually has two of them. Notice the gold and silver tone ones in the dial. You adjust one by moving the watch bezel, and likely the crown at 10 o'clock to adjust the other one. Underneath them, you see the manually-wound mechanical movement. On the partially decorated movement Michael Bittel will place diamonds (or perhaps other jewels) if you like. I've never see thing type of gem setting in watch movements before.

The bezel is easily one of the best styled parts of the watch, certainly good looking. Twisting it is a bit hard, and the action could be a tad bit smoother, but it does not have any "give" and will not rattle around like cheap bezels will. The numbers and markers are actually engraved into the bezel, and the finish on the top of the bezel is an awesome almost gunmetal dark gray. The crystal is virtually flush with the case and the anti-reflective coating makes it really easy to read at angles.

Louis Vuitton watches always feel special. They don't release new watches too often, and when they do, they barely give any information about them - they are also quite rare. They have been playing with the Tambour case for a while, adding new designs and styles all the time. This is likely to be the "highest-end" Louis Vuitton Tambour watch of them all. My favorite is still the Louis Vuitton Tambour Diver watch. Now you might not think of Louis Vuitton as a watch maker. You'd be right in theory, but you'd be missing a major point. The LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) Group owns several important watch brands including Zenith, Tag Heuer, and Hublot. This gives them a bit watch making asset pool to pull from. So in a sense, Louis Vuitton branded watches are not just another fashion watch. While they have been making watches for a little while, and this new Tambour Mystérieuse watch is the first in-house movement for them. Previously they pulled movements from else where. The price of the new watch is very high, almost too optimistically so, but we can get to that in a moment.

The timepiece is a fun idea in a cheeky sort of way. You have an easy to live with watch that has some unique qualities you won't find anywhere else. The watch is meant to be a new type of fashion accessory, just like the Livestrong bracelets of a few years ago. And just like those silicon rubber bracelet the Red8 watch is available in a slew of colors. Not to mention that the Red8 does comes with an easily removable... silicon rubber bracelet. See this one here in red. The little elements on the Red8 watch are done in a quality manner. I am afraid that fashion forward types getting one of these may not be able to appreciate some of the more minor touches, but they are there. You can tell that effort went into the watch being able to satisfy even snobs like me. Staying on the topic of the strap, you'll notice the well designed PVD metal buckle with double pins. The metal has nice sharp edges and feels quality made. You get a nice Red8 logo engraved in it as well.

Ananta watches are big, at 46mm wide (and between about 14mm - 16mm thick depending on the model). Still, the watch fits well, and doesn't slide around. Even on smaller Japanese wrists the watches looked good, and will look good on your wrists too. They make a wonderful statement, are and built just as you'd expect from a luxury Seiko watch. The cases are in a few parts, while the case is secured with screws to the bezel part. Thus, there is no real caseback piece. This allows for the back to be very smooth and curved a bit. The case is further 100 meters water resistant. Plus, to remove glare, the sapphire crystal is anti-reflective  (AR) coated.

Casio makes watches such as this in a variety of colors. Other models in more colors still. From black to white, and everything in between, there is a cool looking Casio G-Shock style watch for you (man or woman). Aside from being hip and urban looking, these Casio Baby-G watches pack in a lot of features - and are excellent values. The whole point of the watches is actually to be durable and shock resistant. While if you thrash around the watch, it will show wear, it will take a lot to out right damage the watch itself. Underneath the resin (fancy mixture of plastics) case and strap is another special plastic buffer around the inner steel cage for the Japanese quartz movement. You can see the steel caseback of the watch in the images.

Breitling Superocean Heritage Chronograph Limited Edition 125th Anniversary Watch

Breitling Superocean Heritage Chronograph Limited Edition 125th Anniversary Watch

I discussed the Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk watch here. There you can learn about how much I love the watch and why. Seiko's new mission for the watch is to make it clear how important "private space travel is." Just hearing that makes me think gleefully of every sci-fi Anime cartoon I've ever seen (think Cowboy Bebop - good stuff). So thank you Seiko for mentioning (once again) on behalf of the Japanese, just how important it is that we focus on space. Sure the politicians complain that we need available fiscal resources for stuff here on Earth. I just say... think of asteroid mining. Ridiculous amounts of resources on what are essentially infinite rocks in space. Mine them to our hearts content and there is absolutely no negative environmental impact on our home planet. Am I going off on a tangent? Yea, maybe I am but you get the point! And so does Seiko.

It also makes fantastic marketing sense for Cricket watches to be presented to Presidents by Vulcain. Talk about effective and easy marketing. What a sell that is if you know a few world leaders are wearing the same watch. It is certainly a step up in value from the Jorg Gray 6500 watch that Obama currently wears. The fact that he wears that watch shot Jorg Gray into the stratosphere of success. I don't think the same will happen to Vulcain - even if everyone knows about it. I don't know that Obama has even been seen wearing the watch as is the fact with the Jorg Gray, maybe once his second term in office comes he will switch it up a bit with the watches. The Jorg Gray watch means a lot. Mostly because it is a simple piece that most people can afford and relate to. That is not the fact with the Vulcain Cricket Anniversary Heart watch that doesn't go for lower than about ,500.  From 0 to ,500 (or more) is not an easy move for most people. So Vulcain has the tough task of convincing the more well-off segment that a luxury watch a President owns (and maybe doesn't wear) is a good personal investment. But you know what... at least here in America... Vulcain doesn't market at all. Not even a magazine ad. It would catch attention having a statement like "What can you and the President have in common? This fancy Vulcain watch!" No, they don't do that, and I have a feeling they haven't done things like that since the vintage French ad you see before you. Way to throw away a half-way decent marketing pitch Vulcain. I once visited a watch shop in Germany that sold Vulcain watches. They also sold like antique clocks that didn't seem to work. Those were much more prominently displayed than the Vulcain watches that sat in the back collecting dust. All I am saying is that Vulcain spent 50 years creating this well mannered trend, only to waste it in current times by not sharing it with potential American buyers (and others it seems).

The Everyday Oris F1 Day Date Watch

The Everyday Oris F1 Day Date Watch

The watch is really all about the dial - which looks great. First and foremost for Seiko is function. As you can see the Chronograph and GMT models are extremely easy to use and read. For a simpler look you can go with the GMT model. It has the time, date, GMT hand, and a power reserve indicator. Very clean lines, and impressively bold, yet beautiful. The chronograph model adds a 12 hour chronograph to the mix, with the chronograph subdials being stacked for the easiest reading possible (all the chronograph hands are also red). Let me tell you why Seiko high-end chronographs are the best on the market to use (in my humble opinion). First, the chronograph movements utilize a column wheel and vertical clutch (if you don't know what these are, that is OK, but they are things you want in a chronograph movement). In addition to being accurate (and actually increasing the power reserve time on the Spring Drive watches!) they utilize a "ready, set, go" feature. The chronograph pushers have a two-stage operation. Let me explain this simple but important concept. Press the chronograph start/stop pusher down and you feel a gentle springy resistance until it comes to the first stop. You've just gone from "ready" to "set." Then press down a bit more and you start the chronograph. The chronograph starts precisely when you press the pusher down the second time, without any lag time. This way you start the chronograph at just the right time, and it feels so nice! The second you try it, you'll be sold - I was. It might even make you use the chronograph function much more than normal. The chronograph is also used for the tachyemeter scale on the bezel. That is a function no on uses. A limited edition version of the Ananta Spring Drive Chronograph a clean, bare bezel.

One the rear of the watch is the most important phrase. There is engraved "For Black Belt Only," apparently in rose gold. To me, it is a lot like those cheesy hats that remark "I am number 1." At least here it is hidden on the back. If there was ever a watch that was based on emotion, it is this. I don't know how many black belts there are in the world, but if you see someone with this watch, ask them to prove it to you. I suppose the alternative is wearing your black belt on the exterior of your clothes all the time. So to the kick-ass nation out there, get yourself one of these watches. Cause if you went through all the work of getting a black belt, you want people to know! Price for this watch actually isn't too bad given Arpa's track record. You can "apply" to get one for the retail price of 3,000 Swiss Francs.

3. Wait until the giveaway is over on March 1st, 2010 for the winner to be chosen at random.

The watch is pretty comfortable to wear, I have no complaints. The watch looks neat, and is fun to wear. I think to myself how appropriate it would be for a suit and tie. You could pull that off really well, but they the luxury part of my mind starts to think that the design could actually quite easily lend itself to a more luxury build. Imagine a shiny alligator strap and gold case would look very cool. If the Pi Watch is a big hit, I can see it happening.

Breguet is probably the widest user of guilloche engraving on watches these days. Sure you have a lot of brands that do it a bit, and boutique watch companies that specialize in it - but as a mainstream (relatively speaking) luxury watch brand, no one is known for more guilloche engraved decorated dials than Breguet. Inside the watch is a movement that fills the entire 41mm wide case. It is actually a pocket watch movement, a Frédéric Piguet caliber 506.2 (most likely manually would). Piguet is a name you here as applied to movements a lot, and it is just a Breguet quirk to use it here. I would have preferred an automatic, but then again it would have not look as good all decorated up. For the Q-Bert look and the Breguet luxury you'll pay between ,400 and ,300 for the Ref. 5967 watch depending on whether you get it in 18k yellow or white gold (respectively). It should be out Fall 2009.
